Falls affect far more than mobility. They also impact brain health, independence, and quality of life.

Neuroscientist Kelly Tremblay notes that falls remain the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, especially among adults over 60. The good news: many falls can be prevented through movement, strength training, education, and sensory health.

Research shows that sitting for more than 10 hours a day can significantly increase dementia risk, while light activities such as walking, gardening, or stretching can improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and strengthen communication between the brain and body.

Balance relies on vision, hearing, the vestibular system, and proprioception, the body’s awareness of movement and position. The brain constantly processes signals from the eyes, ears, muscles, and joints to help us navigate and respond to our environment. As we age, changes in these systems can increase the risk of falls and cognitive decline. The cerebellum, thalamus, and hippocampus all help coordinate movement, spatial awareness, and balance, and physical activity helps keep these systems functioning efficiently.

The key takeaway: staying active, protecting eye and ear health, and engaging socially and physically can help preserve independence, reduce fall risk, and support long-term brain health.

Savoring Summer: A Fresh Take on Wellness

This month, we’re celebrating simple, seasonal ways to support well-being through nourishing meals, fresh ingredients, and meaningful moments around the table.

Eat with the Season
June brings berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and leafy greens to their seasonal peak. These foods are naturally rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and hydration, while adding vibrant flavor to summer meals.

Hydration with a Twist
Staying hydrated is key to wellness, especially as temperatures rise. Infuse water with strawberries, citrus, mint, or basil for a refreshing alternative to sugary drinks and an easy way to stay hydrated during warmer days.

Lighten Up, Don’t Give Up
Summer meals can be both satisfying and light. Think grilled proteins, fresh salads, and whole grains paired with bright, zesty flavors. Swapping heavy sauces for vinaigrettes or citrus-based dressings can make meals feel refreshing without sacrificing taste.

Make it Meaningful
Wellness goes beyond what’s on the plate. June is a great time to take meals outdoors–whether it’s a picnic, a shared meal on the patio, or simply opening the windows to let fresh air in. Sharing food with others fosters connection, which is just as vital to well-being as nutrition itself.

A Simple Seasonal Recipe: Berry & Spinach Salad

  • Fresh spinach or mixed greens
  • Sliced strawberries and blueberries
  • Crumbled feta or goat cheese
  • Toasted almonds or walnuts
  • Light balsamic vinaigrette

Toss ingredients together and enjoy a dish that’s as nourishing as it is delicious.

A Gentle Reminder
Wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about balance, listening to your body, and finding joy in the foods and traditions that bring comfort and vitality. This June, let food be a source of both nourishment and delight.

Education Opportunities.

At the recent Michigan Counties Legislative Conference, AgingIN’s Chief Learning Officer, Marla DeVries, led an interactive session for long-term care leaders on building cultures of trust in the workplace.

Drawing from current research on trust, engagement, and organizational culture, leaders explored how communication, recognition, autonomy, and purpose shape workforce experience, retention, and team performance. The topic resonated strongly as organizations continue navigating workforce pressures and engagement challenges.

In a study of more than 200,000 employees across 500 organizations, 71% described their workplace cultures as mediocre or poor, reinforcing the need for intentional leadership and culture development in aging services.

AgingIN offers customized education and leadership development experiences tailored to the real-world challenges facing aging services organizations today. Learn more here.

Cultivating Connection: A New Sensory Garden Blossoms at Mt. San Antonio Gardens

At the Green House homes at Mt. San Antonio Gardens, in Pomona, CA., a new sensory garden is creating meaningful opportunities for residents, families, and staff to connect through nature and shared experiences.

Designed to engage all five senses–sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste–the garden features fragrant and tactile plants, calming water elements, accessible gardening beds, easy-to-navigate walkways, and welcoming seating areas for relaxation and visits.

The space was thoughtfully created to support well-being, particularly for residents living with dementia or other cognitive changes, by offering soothing sensory stimulation and a peaceful outdoor retreat.

Beyond its therapeutic benefits, the sensory garden has quickly become a gathering place where residents, staff, and loved ones can enjoy time together outdoors. It’s another example of how Green House homes continue to create environments that nurture dignity, connection, and meaningful daily living.

Happy Pride Month!
AgingIN proudly celebrates LGBTQ+ older adults, caregivers, and team members across aging services who enrich our communities with their lived experiences, resilience, and authenticity. We are committed to advancing person-directed cultures where every individual is respected, included, and supported. This month, and every month, we recognize the importance of creating environments that embrace diversity and help everyone thrive.

Celebrating National Nursing Assistant’s Week!
From June 11-17, AgingIN celebrates the compassionate, dedicated nursing assistants who bring dignity, comfort, and person-directed care to older adults every day. Nursing Assistants are the heart of aging services. They build meaningful relationships, advocate for elders, and create communities where people feel valued and respected. Thank you to the Nursing Assistants whose work makes a lasting impact on residents, families, and care teams alike.

Honoring World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
On June 15, AgingIN joins communities around the world in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), a time to raise awareness and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the dignity and rights of older adults. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect.

AgingIN believes every older adult deserves to live in an environment grounded in respect, person-directed living, and meaningful human connection. WEAAD reminds us that creating inclusive, compassionate communities requires ongoing education, advocacy, and accountability across aging services. Together, we can foster cultures where older adults feel heard, valued, and protected.

For additional resources on preventing elder abuse, visit the National Center on Elder Abuse, an organization dedicated to supporting older adults through education, advocacy, and awareness.

Interested in connecting with organizations committed to person-directed care, workforce culture, and meaningful aging? Join AgingIN and become part of a growing movement advancing dignity, empowerment, and innovation in aging services.

Each month, AgingIN Focus highlights a national recognition or awareness effort and explores how person-directed values can move awareness into action.
